This artifact is an underwood typewriter from the Hoffmann family.<\/p>\r\n

The Underwood Typewriting Company was founded in 1895. In the early 1890s, Franz Wagner created the first reliable “visible” typewriter allowing those typing the ability to see the text as they typed, and John Underwood purchased his design which was manufactured as the Model 1. The Underwood No. 1 typewriter (their first) was created in 1896. The No. 5 Typewriter created in 1900 is perhaps the one we most know of today, as it was such a popular model that was used in offices and homes! The No. 5 was the first classic modern typewriter with its visible text, upper- and lower-case letters and tab stops. These machines were built to last, so repeat buyers weren’t happening, which was a bad thing for a company trying to make money. By the early 1920s, over two million of the No. 5 typewriters were produced! This typewriter was likely used by Elfriede Hoffmann while assisting her brother with the running of the Hoffmann and Son Shop.
