The first image is of Firefighter Dennis Barron surrounded by the bears in December 1990 (when the Department received them),and the second image is of firefighters giving the bear to a small child in July 1991. The newspaper had this to say about the bears written by Marilyn Johnson in July 1990: “As a member of the Maple Ridge Kinettes, I thought your readers would be interested in knowing how this worthwhile service became available to our community. Last fall the Maple Ridge Kinettes approached Zellers in Haney and purchased Zeddy Bears from them. We dressed them in colorful vests and supplied Cythera Transition House, Maple Ridge Hospital, Pitt Meadows Fire Department, and the community services council with as many bears as they need… The trauma teddy project won the Elspeth Rogers Kinette Service award.” It is important to remember that fire fighters must deal with people on what could be one of the worst days of their life.
