Pitt Meadows Farmers Institute Warehouse

About 1930 a warehouse built by the Pitt Meadows Farmers' Institute on land leased from the C.P.R. on the north side of the tracks just to the west of Harris Road marked the beginning of the Harris Road Co-Op. This warehouse provided an opportunity for the members of the Pitt Meadows Farmers' Institute to purchase supplies in bulk and would later also contain a hammer mill for their use. In 1944 the Pitt Meadows group amalgamated with the Webster's Corner co-op and together they kept the warehouse open one day per week. The Pitt Meadows Farmers' Institute incorporated on March 20, 1928. According to Edith McDermott’s book Through a Century of Progress: The Historical Story of Pitt Meadows (1967): “As part of its mandate” the Farmer’s Institute “held workshops, donated to charities, maintained veterinary services, purchased bulk items, gave voice to protests against government and unfair manufacturing (such as margarine) and was a common interest social group”. Today the Pitt Meadows Consumers Co-Op celebrated their 75th Anniversary in 2005. In 2003 the old warehouse and hammer mill were torn down and a modern warehouse replaced it in a more central location of the site. Unfortunately, the Co-op has to relocate due to the plans for the future underpass.
