The following is from Edith McDermott’s “Historical Story of Pitt Meadows” explaining the history of Pitt Meadows Day: “May 1937, marked Pitt Meadows’ first and last May Day. Isabel Sharpe was crowned May Queen. In 1938 the event became the Pitt Meadows Sports Day and Strawberry Carnival and was held in June. Anne Anderson was crowned Queen. In 1945, the event became Pitt Meadows Day. Miss Pitt Meadows Day, usually held the first Saturday in June is a striking example of what can be done when the members of a community work together for the good of all. This committee is made up of representatives from all interested organizations in the municipality and is headed by the reeve and permanent secretary. Thus, some continuity remains from year to year. The schools do the drawings of the names. With the permission of the parents, names of Grade 6 girls are placed in a box and a name is drawn. This girl becomes Miss Pitt Meadows for the year. Names are also drawn for an attendant, medallion bearer, record bearer, two flag bearers, boys and ten flower girls from primary grades. On the day a big parade is held with classes for commercial vehicles, junior organizations, senior organizations, decorated bicycles, decorated novelties, costumes.” The photographs feature the Miss Pitt Meadows Royal Party from 1938 to 1956. The Queens were Isabel Sharpe (1938),Anne Anderson (1939),Olive Howe (1940),Marie Bjornson (1942),Constance Watney (1944),Patricia Mostrenko (1945),Mary Vayda (1946),Reta Kvaas (1947),Marlene Wickson (1952),Arlene Austring (1955),and Florence Rowe (1956).
