?<\/span>Mayor Oscar Austring served as mayor from 1966-1975. ?<\/span><\/p>\r\n Oscar Austring was born on January 3, 1916 in Beaver Flat, Saskatchewan. He died on July 9, 2005. Oscar and his family moved to Pitt Meadows in 1925. His father (John Austring) started the blueberry industry in Pitt Meadows. In the early 1950s Oscar cleared some land and started a blueberry company of his own. Oscar and his father were instrumental in developing the blueberry industry in B.C. He was President of the BC blueberry Co-op for 27 years and a founding member of the North America Blueberry Council. Prior to serving as mayor of Pitt Meadows, Oscar was a Pitt Meadows Councillor (Alderman) between 1950-1965. He spent many years involved in Rotary, the Masonic Lodge, the Shriners and an active member of the Golden Ears Winter Club. <\/p>\r\n Co-workers have fond memories of Austring. In an interview with the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows News, Sieb Swierstra who served as a councillor under Austring from 1972-1975, said \"he was a very effective person [and] he had the ability of getting his points across in a very positive manner. I was a rookie Councillor and I could always turn to Oscar to get his opinion.\" <\/p>\r\n According to a local's account Oscar Austring hired him as a young teen to fix his telephone line. It was $5.00 per service.
