Mary Struthers (nee Klassen) was a former Pitt Meadows resident and business woman. She was born on September 15th, 1924 in Herbert, Saskatchewan. Mary and her family moved to Pitt Meadows when she was 17. She applied for a job at the General Store, which operated in the same building as the Pitt Meadows Museum’s General Store. In a recorded memory by Mary Struthers, she recollected “I had an appointment for a job interview as a clerk for their General Store, Consolidated Grocery. The interview went well, and I began to work there the following day. Little did I realize, then, that Mr. Struthers would, three years later, become my father-in-law!” While working at the Struthers Store she met Bob Struthers (son of the storekeeper) and in 1945 they were married. They had two children. Their eldest was John William Struthers born on March 18, 1946. Their second child Jean Helen Struthers born on July 23, 1948.

Mary became Pitt Meadows’ first hair dresser. Her salon was called “Mary Struthers Hair Dressing.” An image of the advertisement for her salon is below. This advertisement is taken out of the 1964 Pitt Meadows Secondary Yearbook.

In 1974, she retired. Her husband passed away in 1982.  At age 87, she passed away on June 25, 2011.

In her obituary, her children reflected on her hospitality for their friends and family. They explained that “Mom delighted in feeding people, and would set out her homemade sweets, bread and cinnamon buns for all to enjoy. She was also a very determined woman; when she took on a project, she gave it her all. This trait helped to give her brother- in-law Jack a much better quality of life than he would otherwise have had. He lived in a second house on our property, because he was too unwell to be on his own, and Mom managed his very challenging dietary needs for many years.”

From this recollection, it is evident that Mary was a resourceful, generous, caregiver who did not neglect to save a seat at her table.<\/p>\r\n
