The first photograph features Hans Hoffmann assisted by then Chief Len Garis cutting a cake to celebrate 50 years of community service in 2001/2002.The second photograph is of Three former fire chiefs, one of which is Hans Hoffmann, and the then current chief, Len Garris posed in front of the first fire truck at the fire hall. Another man, perhaps the assistant chief is also posed with them c.1991/92 Len Garis was the first paid Fire Chief in Pitt Meadows. He joined the fire department in 1980, became the volunteer fire chief in November 1984 and began his full-time paid position on April 1st, 1991. Prior to becoming the first paid Fire Chief, he was an instructor and coordinator at the Justice Institute of B.C. Fire Academy and worked for the fire department for Expo ’86! Garis worked diligently and productively in his position and was even awarded an economy in Government award from the Fraser Institute for his sprinkler bylaw. Garis took a full-time job as Fire Chief in the city of Surrey in 1998 where he stayed until his retirement in 2019!
