The war surplus pumper behind them and the first real fire truck owned by Pitt Meadows. The paper reads “In 50 years, the Pitt Meadows Volunteer Fire Department has grown from two stalwarts and all available hands operating a portable pump to a highly-trained 30-man force than can deploy three pumpers and a rescue truck. The demands have changed too. Once, volunteers arrived at house and barn fires wearing work clothes and put out fires with a simple technique: common sense. Now each volunteer must have 32 hours basic training plus 104 hours of education a year and wear specialized gear to lessen the risks of modern fire fighting. In 50 years, fire fighting has evolved to encompass all types of rescue, first response at serious traffic accidents and dealing with hazardous materials.
