Cordelle Groceries/Shoemaker's Shop

The long and narrow "shack" that stood on the triangular shaped lot at the north west corner of Advent and Harris Roads was demolished in 2003. This oddly shaped building began its life in the late 1920's as a grocery store under the proprietorship of a Mr. G.G. Cordelle who owned yet another store a little further east in Hammond. In June 1931, when he moved his Hammond store to Haney, the Gazette Newspaper remarked "People seemed to feel that when they found their way to Cordelle's they had blazed a path to a business place where the best of goods were had at process to beat the Dutch". Soon after Mr. Cordelle sold the building to the Anderson family who raised a brood of children in the building. In the early 1970's the structure was sold to the Chermcara's who established a shoe repair business in the front of the building and maintained their household in the back. The lot non-conforming for any future development and when the Chermcara's were ready to sell the District of Pitt Meadows acquired the site. The municipality did investigate the possibility of bringing the building up to code and leasing it out to a suitable tenant. However, a lack of a proper foundation under the structure had caused years of decay in the building and the difficult decision had to be made to tear it down. Today nothing remains of the original structure but the property is maintained as a green space where pedestrians can rest while waiting for trains to pass.
