John Blaney was born in Lanark, Scotland in 1855. He emigrated to Pittsburgh, U.S.A. where he worked as a gardener to Andrew Carnegie. He married Mary Ann Christie while in Pittsburgh. Then he moved to California. Subsequently he accompanied the Thomas family to Maple Ridge on account of good fishing. By 1885 he was living in Yennadon (South Lillooet) on CPR land (made available by Order in Council in 1885). Blaney was the Reeve of Maple Ridge in 1903, 1905-1906. His wife died in 1905, and Blaney moved in 1908 to Harris Road North of the Katzie Slough with two of his three children Jessie and David (Margaret, his eldest was already living away from home),he farmed about 25-30 acres. John Blaney was the first Reeve of Pitt Meadows in 1914 and served as a councillor. He was 92 years old when he died in 1948 and is buried in Maple Ridge Cemetery. John Blaney’s son David would raise his own family in this house. The house is currently listed on the municipality’s heritage register.<\/p>\r\n
