Our home, purchased in November 1984 for $84,000, became our residence in January 1985. First job that month, replace the hot water heater.... The home was the display home as the former Feed Lot was redeveloped for residential housing south of Hammond Road beginning in the early 1970s. A 4-way split, there was a 5 ft crawl space under half the home with a rough rec room and small work area. 2nd level was 2-pc bathroom, laundry room, rough finished bedroom and family room. 3rd level was kitchen, dining room and living room with a short flight down to the front door. Upper level, main bathroom, master with 2 pc ensuite and 2 other bedrooms. We would soon need all the bedrooms for 4 sons. I took the rough rec room in the basement out and built a proper, 5th bedroom and rec room with insulation, vapour barrier, drywall...carpet in the bedroom, tile in the rec room and on the stairs. The tiles were black as was the fireplace, facing and hearth (I added the latter to a bare fireplace) and the room was hot pink, yes, that was the request. And, I enclosed a small workshop with bench. Closets and cupboards were built in the the family room and bedroom on the 2nd level, a small refrigerator was added. The rear exit was off the family room onto a hokey set of stair to a concrete floor at grade with windows in the south wall and sliding glass doors leading into the yard. The walls rose from grade to a deck off the master bedroom. We were soon building new 6 foot high 'good neighbor' fencing around the back yard, enclosing the carport and ripping down the old deck off the master and lower walls, windows and sliding doors. A proper foundation wall was poured and new double decks were built off the family room and master bedroom. The kitchen needed early attention as there was very Little counter space. So, I built a 5 foot by 4 foot extension beyond the sink and cupboards with new dishwasher beneath, stools (Phillipine mahogany) for seat 3 at the extended bar and tiled (never done it before) all the counters and backsplashes. I also removed the wrought iron railing overlooking the family room and completed a capped, drywalled wall in its place. The kitchen, family, laundry, living and dining rooms have all had new flooring subsequently. The 2-pc bathroom off the family room got a complete makeover and a shower. In 1986 while the 2nd eldest was in hospital after being struck on the Lougheed highway a 12 yrs of age on the eve of Expo 86, I did my 2nd bit of brickwork, building a fireplace with twin side decks one for BBG (with propane tank storage underneath) then other for serving (with wood storage for fireplace underneath). Boys grew into men and left for families of their own. We have guest space for occasional visitors in 2025. My Wife likes the gardening and we get lots of Cherries, Blueberries and a variety of greens from peas and beans to lettuces.<\/p>\r\n
