History of the Eyemoto Family

Mankichi Eyemoto and Haruyo Muramoto were born in Yamaguchi-ken, a prefecture in Japan. By the time Mankichi was 19 years old, he immigrated to Canada to search for better opportunities. In 1904, he arrived in Pitt Meadows, it is believed that he was the first Japanese Canadian farmer to arrive in the area. Originally, Mankichi worked for a Hakujin (non-Japanese) farmer. Later he leased and then bought several acres of farmland in Hammond, where he worked as a berry farmer. He was encouraged by local farmers to recruit more workers for their farms. Prior to 1911, Mankichi wrote to Haruyo asking for her hand in marriage, which she accepted, and they were wed in 1911 after she arrived in the area. The family grew up, and there were lots of children.

In 1942, the family was forcibly removed from their home and sent to Manitoba to work as farm labourers. Their assets were liquidated when they left the area. In 1946, the entire Eyemoto family, except for the two eldest daughters, were forced to return to Japan (Iwakuni) on June 17th, 1946. Shortly after their return to Japan, both Mankichi and Haruyo passed away in 1948. Several of the children worked as interpreters for the British Commonwealth Occupation Force. It was through the hard work and determination of the two sisters who remained behind, Yoshiko and Haruko, that the siblings were brought back to Canada.
