Click Here for DirectionsWe were lucky here at the Museum to have to wonderful Summer Students this year, including Marion. She worked very hard on a lot of scanning and accessioning projects, as well as just being an extra set of hands whenever needed around both of our two sites. Here she tells us all about her summer at the Museum!
Hi, my name is Marion and I am a third year archaeology student at SFU. I was working as the Collections Technician for the summer. My main project for the summer was scanning and accessioning the boxes that were loaned to us by the McMyn family. As one of the founding families of Pitt Meadows, the McMyns' family history and archives are very important to the museum. The task to sort through five boxes filled with photos, documents, family trees, books, newspapers, etc. was quite significant. A total of 780 photos were scanned, accessioned, and added to our database so that researchers can easily access any information on the McMyns. Hundreds of pages of documents were scanned and photocopied to be added to our archives. This massive collection will contribute to expanding our archival research files on the history of Pitt Meadows, and will be returned to the family.
In addition, I worked with Rebekah to organize the map and plan collection and update our map finding aid. The old map finding aid was very incomplete, was missing a lot of our maps, and did not contain much information about the maps. The maps also needed to be properly photographed and inventoried. We created a new map finding aid with a lot more detailed information to facilitate research initiatives and added in maps that had not been accessioned.
During my time at the Hoffmann site, I also began working on photographing and inventorying all the artifacts and engines, but that is a much bigger project that will need to be completed in the future!
Among other things, I had the opportunity to help out with Heritage Thursdays which went very smoothly thanks to Hui's hard work. It was a great experience to work in collaboration with Hui, Rebekah and Keagan on various projects. I really enjoyed my time at the museum this summer!
