History of the Hayakawa Family

Sukesaku was born in Shizuoka-Ken, Japan on November 17th 1896 and Kin was born in Shizuoka-Ken, Japan on February 21st 1912.  In 1924 Sukesaku arrived in Canada, and in 1930 Kin followed.  At some point they arrived in Pitt Meadows, where the family owned a strawberry farm. Sukesaku was heavily involved in the Pitt Meadows Japanese Farmers Association until the Association ceased to be active after the war broke out in 1942.

The family was forced to leave Pitt Meadows in 1942 along with anyone of Japanese descent. They travelled by train to reach Manitoba, where they were put to work on the sugar beet farms there. The family lived in a small log cabin. After they were allowed to leave the internment camps, the family remained in Manitoba moving to Whitemouth. They had two more children after leaving Pitt Meadows: Leslie Iwao (son) born on December 22nd 1949 and Amy Emiko Hayakawa (daughter).

Internment Records

Through the Landscapes of Injustice, the Internment Records for each family member are now accessible. If there are no records of the family member it could be because they were under 16 years old and were put on their parents forms.
