The Pitt Meadows Lions Club was officially chartered on May 7th, 1951, after an organizational meeting was held on April 5th, 1951. There were 18 charter members present, and they had the sponsorship of the Maple Ridge Lions. The charter president and secretary of the club were Charles Armstrong and Gene Bennet.
The Lions proper name is “Lions Clubs International”. It is the largest service organization in the world with over 1.4 million members (as of January 2020). The Lions believe in developing projects and activities geared towards the needs of their community.
The first meeting was held at the Wild Duck Inn. The Lions used other facilities such as the old Council Chambers, the Recreation Hall, homes of various members, the Old Anderson Store, the old Pitt Meadows elementary school before their own hall was built. In 1956, primarily at the instigation of Lion Davie Jones, the Society was incorporated and the current Den site on Harris Road was prepared. Building materials were purchased and obtained from stripping the old Number One School House (on the corner of Harris Road and Hammond Road). The Den was constructed between 1957-58, and was expanded in 1975, and more renovations happened in 1998.
We have the Lions to thank for reactivating Pitt Meadows Day in 1951, with the first Pitt Meadows Day happening in 1952 to much fanfare. They were strong advocates for our communities annual celebration. Every year they have a delightful pancake breakfast on Pitt Meadows Day too!
The Lions Den is the focus point for Lions activities. The Lions meet on the first and third Thursday of every month (except August). Today there are approximately 20 members who serve our local community.
The Pitt Meadows Lions have supported our community throughout their 75 long years, some beneficiaries:
- The Ridge Meadows Hospital
- The disabled lift in the Rcreation Hall
- The old Pitt Meadows Library
- Search and Rescue
- Local Law enforcement
- The Cenotaph
- The Lions Fun Park
- Pitt Meadows Fire Department
- Scholarships at the high school
- Hot dog day at local elementary schools
- Eagles in the City
- Pitt Meadows Museum
The list could go on and we still wouldn’t scratch the surface of all the work that the Lions have done for our community.
Happy 75th anniversary Lions!
